Australia: Governor General comes out in support of equal marriage
The Australian Governor General this week indicated her support for equal marriage.
Quentin Bryce made the comments as she concluded her final Boyer Lecture on Friday evening.
She said she hoped Australia would become a country “where people are free to love and marry whom they choose”.
“And where perhaps, my friends, one day one young girl or boy may even grow up to be our nation’s first head of state,” she said.
In the wide-ranging speech, Ms Bryce suggested that Australian people did need to actively recognise that there are still areas of Australian life which needed to be reformed.
Ms Bryce, who is expected to be leaving her post shortly, also became the first Australian Governor General to say that she thought Australia should become a republic.
