US: California sees eight-year record number of weddings month Prop 8 struck down
More couples in the US state of California married in the month the state’s ban on equal marriage Prop 8 was struck down, than any other month in the past eight years.
Around 30,800 Californian couples married this July, which is a 35% increase from last year. The last time that number of couples married was in July 2008, prior to Prop 8, when same-sex couples were allowed to marry.
Back in June the Supreme Court struck down Proposition 8, as well as the Defense of Marriage Act. The decision allowed the state of California to resume issuing marriage licences to same-sex couples.
