Alec Baldwin rants that GLAAD ‘killed’ his show following homophobic slurs
Actor Alec Baldwin has blamed GLAAD, describing them as “the fundamentalist wing of gay advocacy”, for the decision of MSNBC to cancel his weekly show after he used homophobic language to a photographer.
The former 30 Rock star was approached by paparazzi last Thursday where he was caught on camera calling one photographer a “cocksucking fag.”
MSNBC then suspended his show.
Speaking with The Gothamist, the actor attempted to play down last week’s outburst.
He said: “Faggot’ is not the word that came out of my mouth.”
“Showing a video in which I call someone a ‘cocksucking something’… you can’t really tell what I’m saying, and we live in a world in which the phrase ‘TMZ’s enhanced audio’ exists.”
Following the incident, America’s largest LGBT media advocacy group, GLAAD, condemned Baldwin on his “pattern” of anti-gay slurs.
Rich Ferraro, head of public communications at GLAAD, said in a statement: “Mr Baldwin can’t lend his support for equality on paper, while degrading gay people in practice.”
Yesterday, Baldwin hit back at GLAAD’s Rich Ferraro and also criticised gay US blogger and commentator Andrew Sullivan.
“You’ve got the fundamentalist wing of gay advocacy—Rich Ferraro and Andrew Sullivan—they’re out there, they’ve got you. Rich Ferraro, this is probably one of his greatest triumphs. They killed my show. And I have to take some responsibility for that myself.”
In June, Baldwin apologised for calling a Daily Mail writer a “toxic little queen”:
“My ill-advised attack on George Stark of the Daily Mail had absolutely nothing to do with issues of anyone’s sexual orientation.
“My anger was directed at Mr Stark for blatantly lying and disseminating libelous information about my wife and her conduct at our friend’s funeral service. As someone who fights against homophobia, I apologize.”
In a series of tweets, Baldwin abused Mr Stark, urging his followers to “straighten out this fucking little bitch.”
