Senior adviser to Prime Minister David Cameron to marry same-sex partner
Michael Salter, the Prime Minister’s Head of Broadcasting, is to marry his long-term partner Rob Church, it has been announced.
News of the proposal was carried in the Daily Telegraph, the first time an engagement that will lead to a same-sex marriage has been announced in the paper.
Mr Salter is a close aide to David Cameron and along with his other responsibilities has played a key role in assisting the Prime Minister and other members of the government on LGBT policies, most notably equal marriage.
He met his partner, Mr Church, five years ago at the Stonewall Awards under the Dale Chihuly sculpture in the Victoria and Albert museum.
The couple say the wedding date hasn’t been set, but they are currently looking for the right venue. They are keen to marry in 2014, the year when equal marriage becomes legal in England and Wales, or possibly in 2015.
Mr Church, a civil servant, this week began working at Ofgem, having previously been at the Cabinet Office and Treasury.
Mr Salter proposed earlier this month during a visit to Italy.
Mr Salter is also chair of LGBT+ Community Pride, the current organisers of London’s annual LGBT summer festival.
