US version of Morrissey’s autobiography edits account of same-sex relationship
The US release of Morrissey’s autobiography has reportedly omitted details about a two-year same-sex relationship and contains other edits.
Morrissey’s autobiography made waves when it was published in the UK in October as in it he suggests that his first serious relationship was with a man.
Now the Independent reports that the US release of the same book plays down stories about the relationship with Walters, and that his name is missing from a story about a night out they had together along with Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders.
According to the report, other details are missing from the US edition, including an image of Walters as a boy.
Neither the UK or the US edition specifically said that the two were loves, however it is made clear in the book that they were involved.
In the book, Morrissey writes: “Jake and I neither sought nor needed company other than our own for the whirlwind stretch to come…for the first time in my life the eternal ‘I’ becomes ‘we’ as, finally, I can get on with someone”.
Since the publication of the book, and the revelation that his first serious relationship was with a man, Morrissey has spoken out to say that he does not identify with the term homosexual, but that he is “humansexual” instead.
In a statement the Smiths singer declined implications from the text about his sexuality.
The US publishers G P Putnam’s Sons have not released a statement addressing concern at the removal of certain details.
