Lady Gaga tells Tom Daley ‘We shouldn’t be going to Sochi at all’ because of anti-gay law
Lady Gaga has urged Tom Daley to decline to compete in countries which have anti-gay laws, in order to boycott them.
The openly bisexual singer praised Daley for coming out earlier this week, when he announced that he has been in a relationship with a man since spring.
In the interview on Alan Carr’s Chatty Man, she went on, however to criticise Russia for its anti-gay law, which was signed by President Vladimir Putin in June, and bans the “promotion” of homosexuality to minors.
“I don’t think that we should be going to the Olympics at all,” she said.
“I mean, I would never take anything away from [the athletes’] hard work, I just think it is absolutely wrong for so many countries to send money and economy in the way of a country that doesn’t support gays.”
“They pepper spray and beat them in Russia,” she continues.
Despite the fact that Daley, as a professional diver, would not take part in the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, Gaga went on to say: “It made me very sad to see the pain that some of the gay kids are in in Russia, and for the world to send their finest for the Olympics… I can’t, it just feels so wrong and sad. I hate saying that, because I’m so excited for those like Tom Daley to go and to win and to rejoice.”
When asked whether she would go back to Russia, she said: “I don’t think I’m even allowed in any more because I screamed ‘I’m gay, arrest me’ on stage last time I was there, so…”
