Two men arrested in connection with the death of a 63-year-old gay man in Chester have been rebailed until next week.

Ronald Hayes, from Morpeth in Northumberland, suffered fatal injuries following an assault near to the Liverpool Arms gay bar, in Northgate Street at around 12.50am on Saturday 23 November 2013.

He was taken to the Countess of Chester Hospital in a critical condition, and subsequently placed on a ventilator.

Mr Hayes, who was a grandfather, died in hospital on Monday 25 November.

It is understood that Mr Hayes had been in the Liverpool Arms bar during the course of the evening, and was attacked after leaving the pub.

It is believed his attackers were in the bar during the evening.

On Tuesday, Cheshire Constabulary told PinkNews.co.uk that they are keeping an open mind about the motive.

They confirmed two 26-year-old men arrested last month in connection with Mr Hayes’ death have both been rebailed until Monday 23 December.

Police are continuing to ask anyone who was in the Liverpool Arms bar, or the area of Northgate Street where the attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday 23 November, and who may have any information of relevance, to contact Chester police on the non-emergency number 101, quoting incident number 50 of 23/11/2013.
