US: Reality TV actor slammed by human rights group for ‘vile and extreme’ gay stereotypes
A US reality television actor has been heavily criticised by LGBT rights groups for an interview given in GQ magazine in which he questioned why gay men would prefer “a man’s anus”, over a vagina.
Phil Robertson, of Duck Dynasty, produced by A&E gave the interview which is due to go in the US edition of GQ’s January edition.
“It seems like, to me, a vagina—as a man—would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me,” the 67-year-old said.
“I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.”
Robertson describes his family, who also feature on the show, as “Bible-thumpers who just happened to end up on television”.
GLAAD, the LGBT rights organisation, commented on the article, in which he also links homosexuality to bestiality.
“Phil and his family claim to be Christian, but Phil’s lies about an entire community fly in the face of what true Christians believe,” GLAAD spokesperson Wilson Cruz said in a statement.
The family are based in Louisiana, which currently has a ban on equal marriage despite a majority of residents supporting same-sex marriage.
“He clearly knows nothing about gay people or the majority of Louisianans—and Americans—who support legal recognition for loving and committed gay and lesbian couples.”
He continues: “Phil’s decision to push vile and extreme stereotypes is a stain on A&E and his sponsors who now need to reexamine their ties to someone with such public disdain for LGBT people and families.”
