US: Gay, Republican, Roman Catholic sworn in as mayor of Atlantic City
In a possible first for Atlantic City, an openly gay man who is also Catholic and Republican was this week sworn in as mayor.
Warning of tough times ahead, Don Guardian was sworn in as the 49th mayor of Atlantic City. He is the first Republican mayor in 23 years.
“Everybody brings their own life experiences,” the 60-year-old said. “I’m an openly gay, white Republican Roman Catholic. I’m a good man, and I make good decisions. I bring that to the job.”
The city has rapidly lost its place as the second-largest gambling city in the US.
By the end of the month, the new mayor has promised that every street in the city will be cleaned five times a week. He has also vowed to tackle the economic and commercial downturn in the city.
