US: Following Supreme Court ruling, Utah same-sex marriage hunger-striker asks for pizza
A man in the US state of Utah who said he was not going to eat again until same-sex couples had the right to marry revoked has begun eating again after the US Supreme Court put a temporary stay on the issue, pending appeal.
Today the US Supreme Court issued a temporary stay, which blocks officials from issuing marriage licences to same-sex couples pending an appeal from the state against a ruling which allowed same-sex marriage last month.
Meacham tweeted
I’ve been disappointed with the lack of pizza people have sent (only 1) Please feel free to send more today.

After having regained the strength from his hunger strike, he tweeted more about why he had embarked on the effort.
@jordangray I am against same sex marriage, but the reason for the fast was the unconstitutional nature of the ruling.

@JosephsbroHyrum This was a victory, but it was one battle in a long war. The State still needs to nullify this.

He said he no longer wished to run for public office. He previously stood for the Constitution party as a state Senate candidate in Utah.
To followers on Twitter, he said: “I have no desire to run for office again.”
Of course, if the Supreme Court rules to uphold the lower court’s ruling, therefore reinstating same-sex marriage in the state, Meacham may go on hunger strike again.
