Video: Indiana official Jim Bopp gets laughed at for saying gay people are ‘intolerant’
Apparently officials in the US state of Indiana saw the irony when an official in favour of a bill to ban same-sex marriage and civil unions called gay people opposed to the bill “intolerant”.
The attendees at the House Judiciary Committee considering the bill on Monday evening burst into laughter when lawmaker Jim Bopp, the head of a law firm in the state, made the comments.
After going on beyond his allotted time-slot about how gay people were “attacking” democracy through opposing a bill which strips away the rights of same-sex couples and goes directly against cultural trends, Mr Bopp went on to deliver his accidental punch line.
He said: “Even more troubling though was an argument made by one who said that the simple debate on the marriage amendment will do the damage. Well, what does that tell you? That there are some people that are so intolerant of other people’s views that a simple debate…” at which point the chamber burst into laughter.
