Star Trek actor Chris Pine calls Russian anti-gay law ‘clearly awful, archaic, hostile nonsense’
Hollywood star Chris Pine has said that the US should have done more to challenge Russia on its anti-gay laws in the lead up to the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.
The actor spoke whilst promoting Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, describing the legislation which bans the “promotion of non-traditional relationships” to minors as “clearly awful, archaic, hostile nonsense.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the law in June 2013, causing an international outcry, particularly leading up to next month’s Sochi games.
“I think we should do more than just send gay Olympians there. What’s happening there in terms of gay rights or the lack of it is extraordinary and awful.”
Pine, 33, plays a character attempting to stop a terrorist attack on the US, which originates in Russia. The film opens on Friday, and is based on the work of the late Tom Clancy.
The character has in the past been played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck.
