UKIP weather: Gay anthem ‘It’s Raining Men’ tipped to re-enter UK singles chart
A campaign to get ‘It’s Raining Men’ to the top of the UK singles chart has been launched, following the homophobic comments of a UKIP councillor.
Over 4,000 people have so far liked the campaign on Facebook, which aims to get the Weather Girls version of the song to the top of next week’s charts, starting from 27 January.
The song will have stiff competition, as it will have to top the sales of Happy, Pharrell’s current number one single, which last week sold over 118,000 copies.
The campaigners behind the chart crusade told The Sun: “For decades now, this song has been used as a gay anthem.
“We thought it fitted all the better based on UKIP’s comments regarding storms and floods being caused by LGBT people and gay marriage.
“We believe that the show of strength to get a song to Number 1 will create a huge spotlight on our campaign for equality as a whole.
“The song, if you like, is our catalyst and part of the bigger message.”
Mr Silvester also claimed in an interview defending his views that more children have been “murdered” as a result of abortion laws than the number of Jews killed in by the Nazis during the Holocaust.
Yesterday, UKIP leader Nigel Farage defended the party’s decision to suspend Mr Silvester.
UKIP’s official position is that it supports same-sex civil partnerships but opposes same-sex marriages. The first same-sex marriages will be held in March of this year.
