Protesters egg home of UKIP ‘gay marriage caused storms’ councillor

The home of UKIP Councillor David Silvester, who blamed recent floods on equal marriage, has been targeted by protesters.

Police are investigating an incident where eggs were thrown at his home.

A rainbow banner was also attached to the wall of Mr Silvester’s house in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire.

Inspector Mark Harling, of Thames Valley Police, told the Henley Standard: “This is pointless behaviour and not the type of activity that is going to be taken seriously in a sensitive debate of this kind.”

An online petition demanding Mr Silvester’s resignation has attracted more than 24,000 signatures.

Mr Silvester was suspended from UKIP on 19 January, and the online petition also asks UKIP to suspend him permanently.

In a statement last week, Henley-on-Thames Town Council said it “strongly refuted” any suggestion that David Silvester’s views reflected those of the council.

The council will discuss Mr Silvester’s remarks at an extraordinary meeting on Tuesday.

A campaign to get ‘It’s Raining Men’ to the top of the UK singles chart has been launched, following Mr Silvester’s comments.

Earlier this week he refused to apologise, saying he will pray for gay people “to be healed”.
