Michelle Obama ‘proud’ of prospective NFL player for coming out as gay
Michelle Obama has tweeted her support for a potential NFL player who recently revealed that he is gay.
The First Lady of the United States tweeted her support for Former Missouri pass rusher Michael Sam, who is also an NFL draft prospect for this year, after he came out as gay on Sunday.
If drafted, Mr Sam would become the first openly gay player in the NFL.
From the official FLOTUS Twitter account, Michelle Obama wrote: “We couldn’t be prouder of your courage both on and off the field”, signing the tweet “mo”, to show that it was written personally by the first lady.
You’re an inspiration to all of us, @MikeSamFootball. We couldn’t be prouder of your courage both on and off the field. -mo

In an interview with ESPN on Sunday, Mr Sam said: “I am an openly, proud gay man.”
“I understand how big this is. It’s a big deal. No one has done this before.
“And it’s kind of a nervous process, but I know what I want to be… I want to be a football player in the NFL.
“I just want to go to the team who drafts me. Because that team knows about me, knows that I’m gay, and also knows that I work hard. That’s the team I want to go to.”
