US Sochi delegation member Caitlin Cahow ‘humbled’ by experiences in Russia
US Olympic ice hockey player Caitlin Cahow, who attended the Sochi Winter Olympics, has said that she experienced no issues when visiting Russia.
The openly-gay silver and bronze medalist told the Associated Press that the people the delegation encountered in Sochi were “unbelievably welcoming”.
She said: “Everyone knew who we were, and I’m quite certain we didn’t experience a single problem,… If anything, they were unbelievably welcoming.”
Cahow is set to represent the US at the closing ceremony at Sochi on 23 February. She was originally to be joined by Billie Jean King, who had to pull out when her mother became ill.
“I’m very proud to represent my country,” she said. “I’m also proud to be a member of the LGBT community representing the United States.”
