In one of the probably less desirable Valentine’s messages, the HMRC has advised all couples planning on moving in together to let their tax office know, particularly if they claim tax credits.

So any same-sex couples with their sights set on getting married when the law changes on 29 March should bear in mind that they must “tell the taxman” when the plan to cohabit.

HMRC estimates that around 1 in 10 claimants have not told it about a partner who has moved in with them. Those who don’t keep HMRC up to date about their circumstances risk getting an overpayment, a fine or possibly a criminal prosecution.

Tut tut.

Nick Lodge, HMRC’s Director General for Benefits and Credits, said: “Anyone claiming tax credits and moving in with a new partner should get in touch with HMRC.

“Moving in together can be a busy time, but make sure you don’t forget to tell the taxman or you could end up facing a penalty or even a prosecution.”

Oh… Happy Valentine’s Day to you too.

A release from the HMRC continued: “Equally, should a couple decide it is not quite ‘happily ever after’, and separate, the claimant should call the taxman again, as a single claimant could be entitled to more money.”

Too soon, HMRC, Too soon.

(Just in case you didn’t guess… the above photo is not intended to out a secret relationship between Chancellor George Osborne and Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls. We’re sure they really enjoy each other’s company though… and talking about their strong support for same-sex marriage.)
