Chelsea Clinton: LGBT rights remain ‘unfinished business of the 21st century’
Chelsea Clinton says the battle for LGBT rights still has a long way to go.
Speaking on Sunday at the Human Rights Campaign’s inaugural Time to Thrive conference, she mentioned her mother, Hillary.
“My mother has often said that the issue of women is the unfinished business of the 21st century. That is certainly true. But so too are the issues of LGBT rights the unfinished business of the 21st century”.
“Changing laws and changing the political dialogue, while necessary, is insufficient to ensure that bullying stops, to ensure that every young person is supported by their parents and their teachers as they question who they are and they discover who they are, regardless of their sexuality,” Clinton added.
In her address, Clinton pushed for more progress in combating homophobic bullying across America. She pointed to celebrities such as Jason Collins, the NBA basketball player who announced that he was gay last April.
She also mentioned Juno actress Ellen Page, who came out as gay at the same HRC conference last Friday, as LGBT role models symbolising change.
