The way this pizzeria took revenge on politicians for an anti-gay bill is amazing
A bill to legalise discrimination against gay couples passed the final legislative hurdle in Arizona yesterday – but this pizzeria wasn’t having any of it.
Senate Bill 1062 would prevent the state from taking action against individuals and businesses who refuse services to people or groups based on their religious beliefs if such enforcement would “substantially burden” the free exercise of their religion.
It has now passed the Senate, but State Governor Jan Brewer has not said whether she will sign the bill into law.
Rosco’s Little Chicago Pizzeria has since proudly erected a sign which says it reserves the right to refuse to serve any State Senators it sees fit.
The restaurant tweeted: “As a longtime employer and feeder of the gay community, Rocco’s reserves the right to eject any State Senators we see fit to kick out…”
Rocco DiGrazia said all but one responses to his window sign – a woman who said she would never eat there again – were immensely positive.
Democrats have criticised Republicans over the policy.
“SB 1062 permits discrimination under the guise of religious freedom,” Senate Democratic Leader Anna Tovar said in a statement.
“With the express consent of Republicans in this Legislature, many Arizonans will find themselves members of a separate and unequal class under this law because of their sexual orientation.
“This bill may also open the door to discriminate based on race, familial status, religion, sex, national origin, age or disability.”
