Bomb threat interrupts gay olympics in Moscow
Just days after the end of the Sochi Winter Olympics, gay rights groups found their ‘Open Olympics’ in Moscow disturbed by a bomb threat.
Russia has been heavily criticised because a federal bill banning gay “propaganda”, which was signed into law by Russia’s President Vladimir Putin in June.
Viktor Romanov, the chairman of the board of the Russian LGBT Sport Federation, said the Moscow event is for amateurs, and would open after the closing ceremony at Sochi.
The bomb threat was called into the gay club which was set to host the opening ceremony of the games this evening.
Unfortunately, organisers said such threats did not come as a surprise.
“This is nothing new in our community, unfortunately,” organiser Konstantin Yablovskiy said.
They hoped the building would be checked and cleared in time for this evening’s festivities.
Over 200 people are set to take part in the amateur games which include sports like skiing and table tennis.
The bomb threat did not stop organisers and honourary guest Greg Louisianis, a US diver, from holding a press conference out in the parking lot of the club.
