US poll: 56% support marriage for same-sex couples

A new poll published recently has found that 56% of Americans support marriage for same-sex couples.

The telephone poll, commissioned by The New York Times and CBS News, compiled data from 1,644 US adults.

It found that while 39% of Americans opposed marriage equality, 56% were in favour of the idea.

Between Republican and Democrat voters, 70% of Democrats supported same-sex marriage compared to only 40% of Republicans.

Additionally, 53% said they would not vote for a political candidate who did not share their view on equal marriage.

These results follow another recent survey of religious groups, showing that Jewish people are most in favour of equal marriage in the US.

In the US, there are now seventeen states that recognise equal marriage. It is however banned in 33 others.

Recently, US Attorney General Eric Holder said that the US Federal Government will recognise equal marriage whether or not it is recognised in individual states.
