Stephen Fry to host musical gay wedding for Channel 4 to celebrate start of same-sex marriages
Channel 4 is to celebrate the introduction of same-sex marriage in England and Wales later this month with a musical gay wedding, hosted by Stephen Fry.
On March 29, the day the law takes effect, grooms Benjamin Till and Nathan Taylor will marry for real in the televised musical ceremony.
The couple are writing the music for ‘Our Gay Wedding: The Musical’ themselves, and the show will include sung vows, musical readings, and ensembles featuring the whole congregation.
They said it was a ‘natural decision’ to have a musical wedding, as Till is a composer and Taylor has previously appeared in West End shows including Les Misérables.
The pair said: “We’ve been together for nearly 12 years, and never thought we’d get the chance to get married, for real.
“Doing what we both do for a living has meant that we’ve spent our entire lives expressing emotion through song, so getting married in a musical, particularly one that we’re writing ourselves, felt like the most natural thing in the world.”
As well as Stephen Fry, the broadcaster teased appearances from surprise special guests and showbiz stars.
John Hay, arts commissioning editor, said: “We are proud to be marking a huge milestone for gay rights – a cause that has long been close to Channel 4’s heart.
“I’m enormously grateful to Benjamin and Nathan for sharing their day with us, and for the talent, creativity and generosity they’re bringing to this amazing piece of work.”
