NYC: 50 people failed to help as homophobe attacked gay couple
A homophobic attack on a gay couple in New York was witnessed by over 50 people, who all failed to intervene.
J.P. Masterson and Peter Moore were out celebrating their 10th anniversary in Greenwich Village before the attack, which took place at West Fourth Street station on Saturday.
The couple say a man approached them and asked them if they were gay, before shouting “I f**king hate faggots” and punching Masterson in the face.
Masterson suffered several injuries, including a broken nose and eye socket, and was treated in hospital after the attack.
According to The New Civil Rights Movement there were about 50 people on the busy station platform, but no one stopped to intervene.
Masterson told CBS: “I couldn’t believe that in this day and age in the Village, which is where I came out and where I felt most accepted, now I have to be on edge.”
He also had a message for his attacker: “You might beat me down, and I might look real grotesque right now, but I’m still standing.”
