MP Nigel Evans denies raping university student
A court has heard allegations that Nigel Evans raped a university student at his Lancashire home.
The Ribble Valley independent MP denies one count of rape, two of indecent assault and six of sexual assault from 2002 to 2013.
Prosecutor Mark Heywood QC outlined several cases against the MP.
The MP is also facing one count of rape.
Before adjourning for the day, the court was told that, in 2011, Mr Evans was introduced to a university student in need of a work experience placement.
After the placement, in March 2013, Mr Evans met with the student at his home in Pendleton for dinner to “catch up”.
It was alleged, after drinking champagne, wine and port, that the complainant suggested it was time for bed. Mr Evans allegedly followed him and guided him into his own bedroom.
Mr Heywood QC said: “The younger man did not at first do or say anything.
“He was nonplussed and acutely aware of the other’s position of authority.”
The court was told that in bed the man escaped three times to the bathroom and sent mobile phone messages to a friend – who had also been an alleged sex assault victim of Mr Evans – begging “help me.”
The London Evening Standard reports his friend advised him either to punch Mr Evans, leave the house or hide in the loft. But the young man waited hoping the MP would be asleep then slipped back to the bed.
Eventually he fell asleep only to awake to find Evans raping him, said Mr Heywood.
“The younger man froze in shock,” said the QC.
The next day, the complainant claims Nigel Evans texted him to apologise for being drunk.
The MP claims all sexual contact between them was consensual. He denies the charge of rape.
He also denies two counts of indecent assault and six counts of sexual assault.
The trial will resume on Tuesday when the first witnesses are expected to give evidence.
