US: Virginia appeals against same-sex marriage to be heard in May
A US appeals court has set a May date to hear appeals against a judge’s decision to strike down a ban on same-sex marriage.
Today, the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals outlined the schedule for the case, indicating the process will start in May, with briefs scheduled for later this month.
Same-sex couples in the state are unable to marry until the case is resolved, and so opponents may seek to drag out the appeals process as long as possible.
It is likely that the case will eventually go to the Supreme Court.
Virginia is one of four states where rulings striking down same-sex marriage are pending appeal, alongside Utah, Oklahoma, and Texas.
