Cambridgeshire Council criticised for not flying rainbow flag at HQ
Cambridgeshire County Council has been criticised for not flying the rainbow flag from its main headquarters during LGBT history month.
The flag was raised outside several public buildings during February’s LGBT History Month, but not at Shire Hall, the council’s main office in Cambridge.
Liberal Democrat Councillor Ed Cearns questioned the decision and has now submitted a motion urging for the flag to be flown in future.
A council spokesman said leaders of all political parties agreed which flags were flown and that currently no “awareness-raising” flags were included.
The council flies the St George’s Cross on St George’s Day, plus the Armed Forces Flag, Commonwealth Flag and European Flag on their relevant days.
Cambridge News reports Council leader Martin Curtis has defended the local authority’s record on equality.
He said: “The most important thing is how we treat all equalities issues, and our record stands up for itself.”
