Same sex marriage is one step closer to becoming a reality in Scotland as its bill to legalise it has received Royal Assent.

Queen Elizabeth II signed the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Scotland) Bill, into law yesterday.

This act now means that same-sex couples will be able to marry by the end of 2014. Some early reports indicate that they could take place as soon as July.

Today also marks the date that the first same-sex couples in England and Wales can register to marry, and same-sex marriages entered into abroad are now legally recognised there.

Congratulations to all of those planning to tie the knot this year, from the PinkNews team.
