Travel: A welcoming and luxuriant cabin break in Argyll, Scotland
Cabins in the woods with spectacular views, cosy features and a range of activities are available through Forest Holidays all year round.
On the suggestion of a holiday in the UK (in February), snow, rain, 90mph winds, all came to mind, but a getaway to a remote Scottish location with Forest Holidays proved quite the contrary.
My partner James and I stayed at the Forest Holidays site in Argyll, near Loch Long. About an hour away from Glasgow, this site gave us awe-inspiring views over the loch, and a warm, luxuriant experience. We were even there on the date that same-sex marriage passed in Scotland.
Under-floor heating, a hot tub and a better equipped kitchen than we have at home were just some of the features of the modern and eco-friendly cabins on offer at the site.
The little extras make the cabins the perfect place to hide away. We could have easily spent the entire week inside, enjoying the luxury of being able to order a pizza through the smart TV to the cabin, and shopping for little extras in the forest retreat shop, but there is also plenty of scope to venture out and explore.
A range of activities were available to book, from the more adventurous three-hour advanced canoeing session to the more serene guided forest ranger walk at dusk.
Opting for the latter, we got an amazing and in-depth insight into the wildlife surrounding the cabins, and the forest ranger showed us how to identify when deer were near, with night-vision goggles to borrow and a stream of information, it was an unforgettable experience.
Choice is the key attraction here – staff are always there to be as hands on or hands off as you like. An entertainment package allows an extensive range of films, and wireless internet, or the option to be totally cut off, should you choose.
There are 9 amazing locations up and down the country, all are pet and family-friendly. If the staff at all other sites are half as helpful as those at the Argyll location were, it is well worth a trip.
