Gay author wins award for Thatcher book
Writer, columnist and playwrightĀ Damian Barr last night won a top award for his memoir of growing up in a small town in Scotland during the Thatcher years.
Barrās book āMaggie & Meā won the Political Humour and Satire Book of the Year at the Political Book Awards.
Itās described as a ātouching and darkly witty memoir about surviving and thriving in Thatcher’s Britain; aĀ story of growing up gay in a straight world and coming out the other side in spite of, and maybe because of,Ā the Iron Lady.”
The award was presented by actress Stella Gonet, who plays the late prime minister in the play āHandbaggedā, a short excerpt of which was performed during the event.
Iain Dale, founder of the awards, said: “These awards celebrate the fantastic breadth of political writing in the UK today, and I hope that they will encourage more people to both read and write political literature.”
