Nigel Evans found not guilty of one count of sexual assault
Openly gay Tory MP Nigel Evans has told a court that he did not rape or sexually assault anyone.
Earlier in the day at Preston Crown Court, judge Mr Justice King told the jury foreman to clear Evans of one charge of sexual assault. Instead a charge of attempted sexual assault will be faced.
Mr Evans pleaded not guilty to the new charge.
The prosecution’s evidence alleged that the 56-year-old MP had tried to kiss a 27-year old Parliamentary worker, but that he had said “no”. Mr Justice King said the evidence did not amount to sexual assault.
He now denies one count of rape, two of indecent assault, five of sexual assault and one count of attempted sexual assault.
Mr Evans’ barrister Peter Wright QC asked him: “Have you sexually assaulted anyone in terms of the allegations set out here, Mr Evans?”
He replied: “No, Mr Wright.”
Mr Wright went on: “Have you raped anyone?,” to which Mr Evans responded: “No, Mr Wright”.
