US: Gay rights group opposes teachers’ tenure protection cut
A leading gay rights group in the US state of Kansas has come out in opposition of a bill which could strip teachers of their tenure protection.
The proposed school funding bill removes the tenure protections given to teachers after three years on the job. It would remove the right for a teacher to appeal against a dismissal decision, and the right to have a hearing officer review the case.
The Executive Director at Equality Kansas Tom Witt, on Sunday announced that the group was opposed to the measure, as it means teachers could be sacked for being gay.
According to Witt, tenure currently protects gay and lesbian teachers from losing their jobs, and that if the state removes the protections, “It’s not like people can go back in the closet.”
