San Marino: Governors to consider recognising overseas same-sex marriages

The government of San Marino is to consider recognising same-sex marriages from other countries.
According to SMTV San Marino, on Sunday LGBT activist Federico Podeschi filed an ‘Initiative of the Council’ with the microstate’s governing body.
Podeschi was appointed three years ago San Marino’s honorary consul to Wales.
San Marino has a population of just 32,000, making it the smallest nation in the Council of Europe, and if the initiative passes it would be the smallest nation to recognise same-sex marriages.
The initiative will now go before the two Governors of San Marino, who have a month to approve or reject it.
If approved by the governors, the bill would then face a vote in the state’s legislature before becoming law in the small state.
San Marino only decriminalised homosexuality in 2004, and so if the legislation passes, it will mark incredibly fast progress.
San Marino is enclaved by Italy, which does not recognise same-sex marriage.
