US: Oregon students wear ‘Gay Is Not OK’ t-shirts to school
Four Oregon students protested the Day of Silence, which raises awareness of anti-gay bullying, by wearing t-shirts that claim ‘Gay is not OK’.
The students, from Oregon City High School, wore t-shirts on Friday which bore the phrases “Gay is not OK”, and “Gay day is not OK”.
According to KATU, they then deliberately sought out a reporter to be interviewed.
Alex Borho, a senior at the high school, said: “I don’t have a big problem with gay people, but it’s when they start parading around the school about how we have a day of silence for gays, lesbians, transvestites. I mean, we don’t have a straight day.
“We don’t think it’s right that the school should have a full day supporting gays, and if it is OK, we should be able to say that we do not approve of gays because we’re religious.
“We don’t believe it’s right to be gay, so they’re offending us just as much as we’re offending them.”
Justin Low, head of the school’s student council, said: “I was just really sad because I take pride in this school. That doesn’t reflect our school, our student body, or our city and community.
“I don’t understand how people can treat others that way, and have that sort of negative feelings towards one another.”
A school administrator said the students were prevented from wearing the t-shirts on campus as soon as the school was aware.
The mother of one of the boys said she did not agree with his views at all.
