US: City council indefinitely postpones consideration of anti-discrimination policy
A Michigan city council has indefinitely postponed consideration of a proposal to ban discrimination based on sexuality or gender identity.
The Saginaw City Council had been set to consider the proposal which would have ensured equal treatment for visitors and residents in employment and public accommodations.
According to the Saginaw News, the decision to postpone the ordinance was made at a 7-2 vote during a Monday evening meeting.
Councilwoman Annie Boensch, who brought the ordinance forward, opposed the postponement, but Mayor Pro Tem Amos O’Neal said city leaders should meet with business leaders, landlords and religious leaders before considering the proposal.
The proposal sought to ban discrimination based on “actual or perceived sex, sexual orientation or gender identity.”
Other local councils in the state of Michigan currently have similar measures in place.
