US: Louisiana anti-discrimination bill shelved for legislative session
Efforts to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in the state of Louisiana have been shelved for this legislative session.
The bill was put on hold by Democratic Representative Karen St Germain of Pierre Part who said she did not have enough votes to pass it.
The House civil law committee on Tuesday was told that the bill would not go ahead.
Those supporting the proposal had told the committee that it would attract people to the state, and encourage people to stay with employers.
Conservative groups and businesses opposed the measure which would make it illegal to sack someone for being LGBT.
Those opposed to the measure did not testify as Representative St Germain did not put it forward.
She said she would return with the proposal in 2015.
