US: Republicans attempt to oust Democratic Governor who allowed gay joint tax returns
Republicans in the US state of Missouri have begun a campaign to impeach the state’s governor for allowing same-sex couples to file joint tax returns.
On Wednesday, a committee in the state will hold hearings into three formal complaints against Democratic Governor Jay Nixon.
The complaints argue that Nixon should be ousted as governor.
Republican Representative Nick Marshall accused Nixon of showing “a blatant and complete disregard for the will of the people”, through the move.
Two other complaints accuse Nixon of taking too long to call elections to replace General Assembly members and a third alleges that he insufficiently punished officials who handed over names of concealed weapons permit holders.
Despite the complaints, Nixon’s spokesman told the Associated Press that the attempts were just a “publicity stunt”.
