Evan Rachel Wood: ‘I was so scared and cried so hard’ when I came out as bisexual
True Blood actress Evan Rachel Wood has revealed that she “cried so hard” when she came out as bisexual to her mother.
In a recent Twitter interview with the Advocate, however, she said coming at 12-years-old to her mother was far more difficult for her.
“I was so scared and cried so hard I never got the words out. I told her years later. Before I came out publicly.”
She also said there was backlash to her coming out as bisexual, despite feeling it was a “weight lifted.”
The actress said people “shamed” her for not identifying as either gay or straight.
“People like things black and white. It’s less scary,” she said. “Grey areas make people uneasy.”
She added: “I also wanted to inspire people to be who they are. Maybe help another struggling terrified 12 year old know it’s OK. And I didn’t want to feel like I had to hide the women in my life.”
