Rita Fischer’s reaction to her son, Jay, coming out is not only candid but utterly heart-warming.
When Rita’s son came out to her, she said: “I had no inkling, no idea whatsoever”, but that she and his father would love him the same way regardless.
Speaking about the love she has for her son, Rita recalls the commitment ceremony between Jay and his partner, Michael. “I was so overwhelmed that I thought I was gonna drop dead from a heart attack. It was one of my bursting moments of pride.”
Rita has participated in the New York AIDS walk since 1985, and has raised nearly $1 million for HIV/AIDS charities in that time.
