Orange Is the New Black triumphs at GLAAD Media awards
Orange is the New Black has triumphed at the GLAAD Media Awards, taking home the prize for outstanding comedy series.
The Netflix series is based on Piper Kerman’s autobiography of the same name, and follows a cast of characters in a women’s prison.
It has won praise for its diversity and approach to LGBT issues, and trans actress Laverne Cox, who plays inmate Sophia Burset on the series, was recently awarded GLAAD’s highest honour for her activism.
The second season of the show, created by Jenji Kohan, is due to begin on June 6.
Star Trek actor George Takei was presented with the Vito Russo award, for his work promoting LGBT equality, and films including Concussion and Philomena also won prizes.
Accepting his award, Takei thanked straight people of the world for “making the gay babies of tomorrow”.
The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honour media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives.
GLAAD recognises nominees for not portraying LGBT people as broad stereotypes, broaching LGBT issues in non-traditional ways, cultural impact and overall quality.
