US: Michele Bachmann opposes building Women’s Museum because it would be a ‘shrine’ to gay marriage
Tea Party politician Michele Bachmann has opposed the construction of a National Women’s History Museum, claiming it would become a “shrine” to “radical feminists” who believe in same-sex marriage.
She was speaking in the US House of Representatives, against the building of the museum on the National Mall in Washington, which already houses the Smithsonian, the National Air and Space Museum, and the National Museum of the American Indian.
Bachmann said: “I believe ultimately that this museum, which will be built on the National Mall, on federal land, will enshrine the radical feminist movement that stands against the pro-life movement, the pro-family movement, and the pro-traditional marriage movement.”
“A no vote is a vote to stand up for traditional marriage and a vote to stand up for the traditional family.”
“The idea of celebrating women is admirable, no one disputes that. I am deeply concerned that worthy exhibits are the exception and not the rule.
“A cursory view of the overall content on the website shows an overwhelming bias towards women who embrace liberal ideology and radical feminism.”
Despite Bachmann’s opposition, the bill was overwhelmingly passed, by a vote of 383-33.
In March, Bachmann claimed that the American people have been “bullied” by gays.
She said: “I think the thing that is getting a little tiresome, the gay community, they have so bullied the American people, and they’ve so intimidated politicians. The politicians fear them, so that they think they get to dictate the agenda everywhere.”
Amid the decline of the Tea Part movement she will not run for re-election to the House of Representatives later this year, but has claimed the decision was “not influenced by any concerns about being re-elected”.
