Kim Kardashian is the latest celebrity to shun a hotel chain owned by the Sultan of Brunei – due to his country’s new rules on stoning to death people who are gay.

Kim was due to hold her baby shower at the Dorchester Hotel in Beverly Hills, but her mother, Kris Jenner, and sister Khloe Kardashian, decided to change locations when they realised the owner was Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.

Last month, the Sultan gave approval to Brunei’s new penal code, which urges death by stoning for same-sex sexual activity.

The previous sentence for those convicted had been 10 years in jail.

A string of celebrities, including Ellen DegeneresStephen Fry and Sharon Osbourne, announced they are boycotting the Sultan’s Dorchester hotel chain.

Beverly Hills council has even asked the Sultan to sell the Beverly Hills hotel.

Founder of the Virgin Group, Richard Branson, also announced on Twitter that “No @Virgin employee, nor our family, will stay at Dorchester Hotels until the Sultan abides by basic human rights.”

The Beverly Hills boycott started when there was a conference cancellation of LGBT group Gill Action Fund.
