Andrew Garfield stars as trans woman in Arcade Fire’s new music video
Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield stars as a trans woman in Arcade Fire’s new music video.
The video, for the band’s new single We Exist, features Garfield putting on a wig, bra and make-up, before going out in public for the first time and suffering a transphobic beating.
After the beating, Garfield breaks out into a defiant dance routine, before joining the band on stage to finally be accepted by thousands of cheering fans.
The track the video accompanies was written by frontman Win Butler, who describes it as the story of a gay man struggling for his father’s acceptance.
Earlier this month, he locked lips with Coldplay singer Chris Martin as part of a Saturday Night Live skit.
Garfield previously expressed a desire to portray more LGBT characters, and suggested a twist that Mary Jane Watson, who will be cast for the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man 3, could be a man.
