Poll finds that 55% of Americans approve of same-sex marriage
According to a new poll, support for same-sex marriage in the US is at its highest ever at 55%.
The Gallup poll released on Wednesday notes that support for same sex marriage passed the 50% mark back in 2012, and that this result was “further evidence that support for gay marriage has solidified above the majority level.”
As shown in most polls, support for same-sex marriage was strongest among young adults at 78%, and those living in Southern US states were most likely to be opposed.
Same-sex marriage is now legal in 18 states across the US. A judge struck down Pennsylvania’s ban on same-sex marriage yesterday, deeming the ban unconstitutional.
The poll results noted that opposition to same-sex marriage was at 68% when Gallup first asked the question back in 1996.
The findings were based on phone interviews with 1,028 adults between 8 and 11 May.
