US: Appeals court to hear Nevada same-sex marriage ban challenge in September
An appeals court has set September as the month in which it will hear a challenge to the state of Nevada’s ban on same-sex marriage.
The order, dated 23 May, approved a request by Lambda Legal to speed up the process after a case was brought on behalf of eight same-sex couples who wish to marry.
September was named as the month in which the appeal will take place.
While the Coalition for the Protection of Marriage, which brought the ballot measure defining marriage as between one man and one woman, will defend the ban, the state announced in February that it will not.
Voters in Nevada approved a ban on same-sex couples marrying back in 2002.
In November 2012, US District Judge Robert C Jones upheld the ban, stating that it does not violate the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution.
