US: Republican congressman to speak at NOM’s anti-gay rally
A Republican congressman has been announced as a speaker at the National Organisation for Marriage’s anti-gay rally next month.
Tim Huelskamp, who represents the Kansas first congressional district in the US House of Representatives, is the first member of congress to agree to speak at NOM’s March for Marriage event next month.
The rally, which will be held on June 19 in DC, will be followed by a gala for which tickets cost up to $15,000 (£8960).
Huelskamp is an active opponent of same-sex marriage, last year claiming that 70% of Americans support traditional marriage, and that Barack Obama was trying to destroy families.
He said: “This President has a radical social agenda and the media will probably give him a pass when, instead of talking about the fact that mum and dad don’t have a job, we’re going to talk about how to destroy the family and replace it with his view of a radical new social agenda.
“So we’re going to hear a lot about that, we’re going to hear a lot of blaming and also a lot of talk about how he would solve this and that problem but gosh darn it he’s had four years to do that and he hasn’t solved one.”
Following the striking down of the Defence of Marriage Act by the Supreme Court, Huelskamp also attempted to amend the US Constitution to ban same-sex marriage entirely.
Though Huelskamp is the only congressman set to speak at the event, he will be joined by failed Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, New York state senator Ruben Diaz, former Family Research Council head Gary Bauer, and NOM president Brian Brown.
