UK: Protest planned against ex-UKIP ‘f**k the poofters’ councillor
A protest is planned against a councillor who refuses to resign, after being thrown out of UKIP for referring to gay people as “poofs”, “dykes” and “perverts”.
Dave Small, who was elected to Redditch Borough Council two weeks ago, faced an investigation for the comments within hours of being elected.
He had posted on Facebook: “Why on earth is this useless Goverment pandering to Puffs? I refuse to call them gays, as what has gay to do with Perverts like Elton John and Clair Balding [sic] who get their jollies in such disgusting ways. to sum up, they should not allowed to be married, they should go back to the closet”, adding “f**k the poofters”.
He was suspended by the party, and eventually expelled entirely, after saying: “I shall never apologise to the poofs and perverts and certainly not the foreigners. The people of Redditch voted for me, I will stand my ground.”
Small has still not stood down as a councillor, planning to sit as an independent, and the Council say they are unable to act as he is not yet bound by a code of conduct.
According to the Redditch Advertiser, a protest will be held next Monday outside the Town Hall, before the first full council meeting since the election.
The protest, which will be held at 6:15pm on Monday June 9, is intended to be peaceful.
Councillors from both the Conservative and Labour party have also called on him to resign his position.
Council leader Bill Hartnett said: “I put it to Councillor Small he owes it to the electorate to resign and contest the seat again as an independent. I hope residents make their views known and Councillor Small does the decent thing and resigns.”
