Ex-UKIP councillor who called gay people ‘poofs’ and ‘perverts’ resigns
A former UKIP councillor who described gay people as “poofs”, “dykes” and “perverts” has resigned.
Dave Small was expelled from the party last Wednesday, just days after he was elected to Reditch Borough Council.
Ahead of last month’s election, Mr Small wrote on Facebook: “Why on earth is this useless Goverment [sic] pandering to Puffs?
“I refuse to call them gays, as what has gay to do with Perverts like Elton John and Clair Balding [sic] who get their jollies in such disgusting ways. to sum up, they should not allowed to be married, they should go back to the closet.”
In February, Mr Small referred to gay people as “perverts” and said that “poofs and dykes” should not be allowed to marry.
He also used defended using the racial slur “p**i”, and predicted the UK would be overwhelmed with “thousends mor scroungers” from Mali [sic].
Following a complaint, West Mercia Police launched an investigation into his comments on 30 May.
In a statement on Thursday, Reditch Borough Council said: “We can confirm that today, Dave Small resigned as councillor for the Church Hill ward with immediate effect.
“The council will now publish a notice of casual vacancy requiring two local electors to call a by-election. Until that time the council is now made up of 17 Labour, nine Conservative, one UKIP and one Independent councillors.”
Before his resignation, a protest against Mr Small’s continued presence on the council had been called for next week.
