US: Rick Santorum joins NOM’s anti-gay marriage rally
Republican Rick Santorum has broken his silence on same-sex marriage, to join the National Organisation for Marriage’s anti-gay rally.
The failed Republican presidential candidate, who is notoriously anti-gay, repeatedly refused to comment or clarify his views on same-sex marriage after a judge that he personally endorsed struck down Pennsylvania’s marriage ban.
Judge John E Jones struck down the state’s ban last month, writing: “We are a better people than what these laws represent, and it is time to discard them into the ash heap of history.”
In 2002, Santorum warmly endorsed the judge at his senate confirmation hearing, saying: “John Jones is another outstanding lawyer and has served not just as an outstanding lawyer, but served the community beyond the practice of law.
“He also went to the same law school I went to. So he also has an outstanding legal education.”
However, he has since repeatedly dodged questions about the judge’s appointment and same-sex marriage.
In a statement, NOM president Brian Brown announced: “I’m thrilled to announce that my good friend and stalwart marriage, family, and life champion, presidential candidate and former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum will be speaking at this year’s March for Marriage on June 19th.
“From his days in the Senate, through his Presidential campaigns, Senator Santorum has never hesitated to stand for marriage and make the argument that the social values of our nation are of primary importance to the well-being of our families and children.”
Santorum is the second congressman to join the lineup, following Republican Representative Tim Huelskamp.
