US: Rhode Island gay mayoral candidate ‘proposes’ to husband in campaign ad
A gay mayoral candidate in Providence, Rhode Island, has debuted a campaign ad recreating his proposal to his husband.
Brett Smiley, who is running in a Democratic primary to replace outgoing mayor Angel Taveras, released the advert, Man With a Plan today.
In it, his husband Jim DeRentis reveals: “Brett is the most organised person I’ve ever met.
“Who else would propose marriage on a powerpoint presentation?”
The former Chairman of the Water Supply Board will face off against City Council President Michael Solomon, judge Jorge Elorza, businessman Lorne Adrain, and Chris Young in the September primary.
Rhode Island became the 10th state to introduce same-sex marriage last year.
Currently, same-sex marriage is recognised in 19 states and the District of Columbia, with a 20th state – Wisconsin – also currently allowing marriages in most counties.
