YouTube science hosts come out as gay couple, condemn homophobic comments
The hosts of a popular YouTube science show have revealed that they are a gay couple, while speaking out about homophobic comments they have received.
Greg Brown and Mitch Moffitt host science show AsapSCIENCE, which has over two million subscribers, with some videos receiving up to 15 million views.
The duo – who have worked on the channel for more than two years – confirmed speculation that they are a couple this week.
They said: “Yes, we are indeed proud openly gay people. We’ve actually been together for 7 and a half years.
“Although we’ve been lucky enough to have family and friends who are completely supportive and loving, it’s been an interesting transition making content on the internet, and seeing the attitudes and opinions of a lot of people all at once.
“Although in general our YouTube experience has been supportive, we’ve also experienced a lot of negativity and discussions around our sexuality.
“The hate that comes from people can be pretty shocking. The homophobia we’ve experienced is evidence of the oppression that still exists in society, and has given us all the more reason to be visible within the community.”
They read some of the comments they had received, including: “The faggoty attitude gets the dislike. If I wanted to see women speaking, I would see women, not guys acting like women”, and “These guys are smart, but damn they look and sound goddamn feminine. Man up guys!”.
They added: “Yes, we’re gay and we’re proud of it, but most importantly we’re just trying to get the world to be more fascinated by science.”
